Only the clutch cable has a long and short version. The early cable is longer as it is routed back through the sidecover and then forward.

I use the high setting but low is probably safer. You just need to be smart about it. You would have to sit there quite a while with the gun on the carb to start doing some damage. It goes quicker than you think. You just need to soften up that old gas glue.

I use a heat gun on stuck slides all the time. Usually takes about 30 seconds and they slide right out.

Try a heat gun. If you don't have one a hair dryer on high may even work.

Are you using a flat wide gasket between the tank and your adapter plate? Sometimes a narrow gasket will work better as the pressure will be higher at the contact area. That might help to seal it better. If you could put some sort of groove in your plate and use an ring that may also work better.

Going from memory isn't there also a ground wire from the headlight to the bucket? Try running a jumper from a ground point on the frame/engine to a ground point in the headlight bucket.
