It looks like your shift drum retainer bracket is installed on the wrong side of the drum. It needs to be installed above the drum, not below it. It will not operate correctly if not oriented properly.

G, Honda started the 7 digit VIN sequence in 1965. What am I missing that would possibly make this a 1964? HT John I realise now that you incoporated a typo in the frame number you quoted (you added an "8"at the beginning) but those numbers are in order. I would guess 1964-1965 as you are only 5000 ...

Yes, you have to install the left side cover (clutch cover) before adding oil or you will get what you got- a mess. No flame here, you punished yourself already.
