OK all done - great improvement! All the things I thought might have been gearbox-related turned out to be the clutch. Cleaned the oil strainer thingy and refilled with 10-30 and the bike is a pleasure to ride.

I think I have read every post about the various clutch plate configurations but still have a question. The bike is a 1964 CB77 - the clutch has been difficult for some time (dragging and slipping) so I decided to take a look. If its any consolation I have the exact same problem. I have replaced all the shaft seals under the right side cover (5 if I recall), also in desperation the seal for the oil pump mounting, (convinced myself that was the problem at one point). Still leaks, although not as much, and I kid myself that...
