I was looking for some jets at Western Hills Honda and told the vintage parts guy that I was using non-ethanol premium. He suggested that might be my problem as the bike's compression does not require it and it may also be burning incompletely. Hey I don't know! That's just what he said. Will try regular soon and see if it makes a difference.

Lead raises the octane rating of fuel. Octane rating is a measure of detonation retardation, as modified by aditives.
Lead also acted as a cushion between the valve poppet seat and the head as a side effect. Apparently aluminum heads, in particular, have steel seats for the poppet to seal against. If the seats are properly hardened (ie. with Stellite) the lead is not needed for valve cushioning.

I use Super for my daily drivers. My family has a lot of '80s model vehicles that aren't of much value, we run regular fuel in them. I'm curious about AvGas though.

For what it's worth, I'm running VP C-12 leaded race gas in my CB77 vintage racer. I cut it 50/50 with Premium Unleaded and it runs fine with no sign of detonation and the valves have had no problems. It gives really good plug reading too.
