Steering Damper Removal

Post by quidger » Mon Jan 16, 2017 5:42 pm

1967 CL77
I'm disassembling so i can restore the bike.
I cannot get the steering damper removed from the triple tree. Cotter pin and castle nut removed,of course.I didn't want to whack it too hard ;but not sure of how else it would come off.
Any hints are appreciated.

Thanks

Nothing tricky about this, it must just be rusted together, Inside the eye of the damper are two thin rubber bushes and inside those two steel ones. The steel bushes must be rusted onto the pin. The pin is part of the lower triple tree and doesn't come off.

If you free off the engine end of the damper, or just unbolt the bracket you should be able to twist the whole damper around the front pin, either the rust will break or the rubber bushes shear but it should come off.

New steel and rubber bushes are still available.

Thanks. Damper twists around the bushing so must just be 50 years worth of stuck.
I'll work with it and use some patience. Sooner or later it will free up.
