Brake shoe and brake arm springs

Post by Husker45 » Sat Jan 04, 2020 5:55 pm

As I continue my journey of building a CB77 from boxes of parts I have a question about the various brake springs. I have 4 sets of brake shoe springs. 2 sets have thicker wire and larger diameter coils. The other 2 sets have thinner wire and smaller diameter coils. Did Honda use different springs front and rear or just change type based on the year of production. Which set is typically preferred?

For the brake arm return spring I have 2 springs that have two coils and two springs with one coil. Same questions as above, are the differences based on front versus rear brake, or year of bike manufacture.

Thanks for any perspective and advice.

Regards,
husker

Without pictures it is a little more difficult but if the thicker springs fit, I would use those.

As for the brake arm springs. Single coil at the front, double at the rear.

This picture shows '61 rear brake panel and later types compared. '61 has the fatter, shorter springs.

G-man,

Thanks for the reply. Your picture shows exactly what I was talking about. Those are the two types of springs I have. It looks like the shorter fatter ones are stronger and therefore would result in a harder pull at the handle. Do you think Honda switched to the longer, skinner ones because of this?

Still trying to figure out how to reduce the file size so that they will post.

Thanks again.

Husker

I think the early brake shoes are deeper so will work with the shorter, fatter springs. You probably need the longer ones if you have the later type.
