right case cover replacement, clutch not engaging

Post by tom6600 » Mon Oct 15, 2007 7:53 pm

Hi. I am new to working on these bikes. I recently broke the right crack case cover of my 65 Superhawk, while kick starting it. I managed to obtain a used replacement. The original case had an angled clutch adjustment screw. The replacement is verticle. I have managed to strip the parts from the old cover and mount them in the replacement. I now have a problem, that the clutch does not work. I have tried adjusting the cable and the lifter cylinder to put pressure on the rod, but nothing works. What have I done wrong?

Yes. I have 2 different manuals, and a parts book for the CB77. One is a repair manul for complete repair of the Honda 305 motors, (Blue, ring bound). The other is for Antique Jap bikes. The first 6 chapters are on C,CA,CB and Cl77's. Neither has information on the problem I have. In the Blue manual they metion that this type of problem with the right crank case breaking, has occured often. However, there are no specific directions on the replacement, or any possible problems that may occur.
When I re assembled the case, I set the lifter cylinder so that it is all the way down, spring half extended. The clutch does not engage, shift to 1st and it stalls. If I adjust the clutch lifter farther out, then the trans does not go into gear. I can shift the gear shifter without pulling in the clutch. I'm sure there is an adjustment that I missed.

Did ya make sure the 1/4 inch steel bearing is inside the lifter assembly where the clutch rod goes?
Screw both cable adjusters IN as far as they will go. Loosen the bolt (10mm head) and with a large screw driver turn the adjuster right/left/right then move it back (left) 1/8 inch and tighten the bolt. Using the cable adjusters adjust the lever to apx. 1/4 inch free play. ....................lm
