2nd Gear Problem

Post by Maloymerc » Tue Jun 12, 2007 12:53 am

Whenever i accelerate at 2nd gear, i get this kind of hesitation...it's like it kinda runs out of steam then it comes alive again...but in all other gears, acceleration is smooth.

Any comments?

*Note: at 2nd gear, the neutral light is also turned on...is there any way that it affects my engine?

Maloy, It sounds more like its skipping out (and back in) of second. Its a common problem. As far as your neutral light coming on, it has to go back to the same problem. You could have a bent shift fork, but more likely its shift drum rollers or worn dogs on the gears. My last CB77 did the same thing, alot of new stuff(gears and rollers) later and it was just like new! Good Luck, Steve Greer

2nd gear

Post by 66dreamer305 » Wed Aug 08, 2007 8:10 pm

I just bought my 66 305 and love it but 2nd gear is also a problem. I think it is the clutch plates and disks beacuse it does not make a grinding noise when it skipps in second. Also if i shift from 2nd to 3rd and give it full throttle is seams to send the rpms up but I do not go anywhere. Is this the same with yours?

66Dreamer, The transmission used in these are constant mesh type so you wouldnt hear grinding. It does sound like you have a clutch problem though. Have you adjusted it? It needs to have a little end play on the cable, does it have that? If you do need to repair the clutch don't worry its easy to change out the plates, get a repair manual for you model and have fun. Good Luck
