Clutch Cable Replacement

I'm in the process of replacing the clutch cable on a '66 CL77. Got the cover off and one end of the old cable off. Now I'm disconnecting the other end at the clutch hand lever. How in the heck do you get that threaded adjustment knob off the old cable to reuse on the new. Are new cables for this year and model supposed to come with new threaded adjustment knobs? Mine didn't which leads me to believe either I have the wrong part or I need to somehow disconnect the cable stop, slide off the knob and do the same for the new cable to install it. ANybody have an idea how this is done without ruining the new cable?

That knob sould come off at the handle end It maybe stuck on it. You can get the new adjuster knomb at a Honda shop and do away with the old one. You should see a cut in the knob to allow the cable to pass see photo.

Thanks for the picture. A slot in the knob is what I would have expected. My CB750's clutch adjustment knobs have the slot in them...BUT the CL77 clutch adjustment knob is solid, no slot. How could that be? Did the cable come with the adjust knob already install in the early years? Don't know. Looks like I'll have to find a replacement slotted knob to finish the job. Well it is very possible that it was how they maid them for that year you could do some swapping of the parts. You would have to heat the ends up on both cables and remove the parts then re-solder the new one I have been told to use silver solder. Also if you buy new ends I think the originals are silver and not the brass ones that I have.

The CL72/77 cables from 1962 to 1966 came with the chrome steel adjusters on them and were not removable.
The 1967 CL77 came with no adjuster on it because HONDA changed to the CB77 perch. ............lm

Well then that explains the mystery. The replacement cable I have that doesn't have the knob must be for a 67 CL77 then. I have the wrong part. BUT........I scrounged a clutch adjustment knob with a slot in it from my CB750 parts bucket that threads in nice. NOt stock but it looks like it will work. THose years of swap meets and buying junk are starting to pay off. When I have time, I will use a band saw to slice a slot in the stock knob and be back in business.
