Gear wear?

Post by GregMcN » Thu Sep 07, 2017 4:50 pm

Examined the gear clusters on strip down and 2 areas of wear.
The engagement dogs on top gear and on the kick start spindle bushing.

For the gear there is a bit of damage on the edges but plenty of metal to engage with 3rd gear. Is this likely to cause problems?
For the bushing I think I saw pictures of a bushing without the top hat flange... did they change on later models? Anyway there is some wear on the top hat part adjacent to the kick start pawl, is this likely to cause problems?

Thanks Greg

Greg

I would recommend that you build up your gearbox with the best parts you can find. Without pictures or the pieces in my hand it is hard to diagnose.

And the 'top hat'.
I think I was talking rubbish about some models not having this.

Looks like it has taken one or two hits but might be OK. CB dogs should have a nice plain taper so that they pull into gear when torque is applied.

I cannot qute see what's going on in there. Have you tried just lifting the shaft and pulling the bush off to look at the surface?

Hi G

For the bush there is wear on the inner edge next to the kick start pawl but only for a segment of about 60 degrees. In the picture you are looking down on the worn bit but I will take it off to get a better picture tomorrow.

All the actual gear cogs look reasonable and the selector forks look good (may have been replaced) but as you can see the top gear dogs look to have had a hard life but I have no real experience of what you can get away with and what will cause problems and have no experience of the bike running to base anything on.

Greg
