Difficult shifting when engine is warm

Post by garncarz » Sat Sep 29, 2018 7:24 am

Greetings,

My '66 CA78 shifts up and down ok, initially. After about 30 minutes of riding, it is impossible to find neutral. Shifting down in to first almost seems like it is locked. When in first, going to second is very hard. 2 to 3, and 3 to 4 seem normal. The next day when the bike is cold, I have neutral, 1 and 2, back again.

Trying to troubleshoot the simple stuff before dropping the engine. Any pearls of wisdom? Thanks !!!

first, they all do that. second, adjust the clutch. tighten it up until the kick start won't engage. thats too tight. it will shift nicely but you can't get going. then back it off to where you can get 1'st without stalling. that's about right. if your clutch plates are old and sticky it's going to be a fine line. loosen the adjuster at the lever first, then use the lifter mech on the right cover to get close. fine tune with the lever adj. sometimes----- after a couple hours riding, you just need to tighten up the clutch adj at the perch.
good luck
Randy
