Kick start snapping back

Post by Kigsby » Mon Mar 05, 2012 3:41 pm

So, the bike is running well ('62 CA77). I had two more things I wanted to do with it - clean the rust out of the gas tank (not much, but enough) and put on the kickstart arm (only the knuckle was attached when I bought it, but the PO gave me all the outside parts). I used the parts manual to put all the pieces on the knuckle correctly, but it's not installed on the spindle correctly. When I pull in the clutch and hit the ignition button, the kickstart arm snaps backwards and hits the muffler. I've read that when it's installed, the arm should be at 11-12 o'clock (which it was), but does anything need to be done to the spring while installing it? Or maybe the spring on the inside is on backwards?? Never had a bike with a kickstart so I'm not familiar with them.
