CB77 Rear Brake Cable

Post by GregMcN » Sat Sep 28, 2019 2:25 pm

Rear brake cable

Does anyone know how the pictured CB77 rear brake connector is attached. It looks as if it might be made in 2 pieces? threaded together? or just soldered on?

Thanks Greg

Hi Greg,
I am pretty sure they are crimped, the groove is for the protective gaiter. The other end is soldered.
Cheers Al.

Greg,

I think Alan is correct in that they were originally crimped and certainly the machined groove locates the outer 'bellows' sleeve.

I've made up several replacements by soldering on the end fitting with no problems, you just need to be confident in your soldering abilities and use the correct flux and solder.

Getting the old inner cable out of the end fitting can be a challenge, I found that heating up the end fitting (with the inner cable in place) to red heat destroyed the temper of the inner cable strands allowing it to be drilled out easily enough with a 3mm drill.

Thanks Alan / Dennis, will have a go at heating and drilling to remove.
