CL77 spark on left only

Post by ugmold » Thu Jan 01, 2015 4:20 pm

Hi folks, new to group,
I just picked up a CL77 in fairly good shape. Hasn't been running in a few years, story goes "ran when put away".
I hitched a battery up and was surprised the lights worked, pulled the plugs, left side good spark, right side sparked once. Wires had been spliced and sloppy, cleaned that up a bit. Ignition wires look original, old. I suspected perhaps the right wire had a break so was going to check for continuity and unscrew from the coil. Should have known better, cracked off at the coil. From there I took a test lead an attached the now bare end of the coil and still no spark.

It all looks old and messy. I'd like to get new points and condensers and would also like to replace those old coils. Anybody know of a good replacement coil? Looks like I can get points and condensers at Ohio Cycle.

Also what material is the coil insulation made of, I might try to mend it with....? It broke cleanly.

Thanks. I'll be posting picture of the bike on my website soon.
Happy New Year,
-ugmold

U ; the coils don't go bad (generally). what you need is new (solid core) plug wires. then go thru the usual tune-up recipe. weak/no spark can be a points problem.
Good luck

Thanks Randy,
Is there a difference between condensers and points between the CL and CB?

Since I didn't get a Title with the bike, I am also trying to determine the year. The seller said it was a 1967.

I think I located some wire and caps, resistor or non-resistor?

Thanks

Look at the wire harness, there may a tag on it, showing the date of manufacture.

The frame was issued in 1967 but the rest is from many years and different bikes not all CL77. ...........lm

One of the later ones, welded-on muffler, later front seat mount, late style front footpegs and remnants of a chrome front fender. The tank and seat are wrong for the CL77, possibly late 350 parts, maybe 350 tail light too. The original passenger footpegs are gone, back fender has been chopped off. Upper shock spring covers are missing. At least you still have the chain guard and the air cleaner covers, those parts are usually the first things to be lost.
