CA77 Points oil seal replacement question

Post by garncarz » Sun Aug 05, 2018 2:33 pm

My '66 Dream has sprung a leak at the distributor/points oil seal. Would anyone have an instruction on how to remove/replace the seal?

Thanks.

You can pry the seal out with a small screwdriver or something similar. Just poke it through the side of the seal, not too far or hard to avoid damaging the bearing behind it. When installing the new one it helps to relieve the edge of the hole a bit with a utility knife (to avoid shaving the rubber off the outside of the seal) and lubricating it well with oil or grease. A socket that just fits the outside is a help in pushing it in. I hope this helps.

As you need to remove the points plate you can remove the aluminum cover and drive the seal out then install the new one.
Add a small amount of lube at center of the new seal. ..............lm

I should have used Ed's method. I put a gouge in the seal carrier and now the leak went from a drip to a stream. Shit. Any way to seal up a gouge?

Update: Just bought a replacement inner cam cover. Learning is expensive.

Ouch, sorry to hear that, but yeah... we've all been there and learned 'things'. I busted the Oil Filter on my Dream trying to get it apart to clean it. Then... after I did get it apart, it was perfectly clean inside. Oh well... live and learn I guess.
