1964 CB77 Intermittent Electrical problem

Post by hefyjefy » Sun Apr 19, 2020 4:14 pm

Bike is original except for the rectifier which I replaced about a year ago, new battery about 6 months ago as it was little reluctant to start with the button. Until today it has been solid, no problems (apart of course from the normal 3rd gear thing), I take it for a ride most Sundays.
Today first of all it quit as soon as I turned on the headlight, then started and ran OK for a bit (headlight off and heading home). It quit twice more, each time it looked like the ignition had been disconnected (neutral lamp didn't come on), turning the ignition off and back on seemed to get it going again. Of course, once I got it home I could not reproduce the problem...
My guess is a poor connection somewhere, probably under the seat, but before I start pulling things apart anybody have any thoughts?

Check that it has the correct length fuse fitted and that the to halves of the fuseholder aren't starting to unscrew.

Now that sounds obscure enough to be the voice of experience?
Thanks.

Not really personal experience, just an obvious thing which would cause loss of all power, after that check ignition switch and wiring on same, then things get a bit more obscure, bad battery connections or earth connection. Be sure to less us know what you find, that way we all learn.

Good Luck

Ha! - well that was the problem! Not only was the cap loose but the fuse had fallen apart, see image.
Thanks, I would have got there eventually but this saved me some time - vibration over 50 years you think? I doubt very much if this is the original fuse but I have owned the bike since 2014 and have never changed it...
