'61 CB 72

Post by BeeBee » Wed Nov 17, 2004 8:28 pm

I'm new to this forum. I bought a Honda CB 72 new from Boston Honda in 1961 for the sole purpose of riding it from Boston to San Francisco and back on a 2-week vacation from work. I did...but that's a whole saga that needs telling elsewhere.

What I'm posting here and now for is to correct some perceived tiny mistakes on this forum, or to be corrected myself. Either way is cool, with good humor or light embarassment, which ever is appropriate.

The 250cc CB 72 was called the Honda Hawk and only the 305 CB77 was called the Super Hawk. The 72 and the 77 were identical bikes; same size, weight, configuration, brakes, etc. except for the displacement and the gearing, (the 250's gears were fractionally closer). The steering damper on the CB72 picture looks like a add-on from the CL72 250 Scrambler. My '61 CB72 did not have one, so I assume mine was typical for '61 because I bought it new..(for $685) ! I'd love some feedback on this subject.

I remember this bike SO well !! It was the first NEW bike I bought even though I had been riding both as a passenger and driver since 1949. That little Honda is still one of the best handling bikes I have ever owned, (and the list is long!). 25 horsepower, 35,55,85 and 105 mph in the gears. In 1961 10cc's/1hp was a hotrodder's dream ! And 25hp is still pretty fair for 335 lbs., seeing as my 750 lb Royal Star has a little over 60-something hp and goes about as fast as I need to.

Well, I'd love to hear from you collectors !!
