looking for a bike, needle in a haystack

Post by Durangoman » Sat Dec 22, 2007 2:57 am

1973 I got a 67 CB77 Superhawk for an Eagle Scout present. My family moved away from Farmington New Mexico in 1981 and left the bike behind. I had been hit on it a couple years earlier and had not tried to repair it, being a stupid HS kid. It ran but rear fender and hightlight area were damaged.

Perhaps someone landed this bike and restored it, parked it in the backyard, or something. Sorry I have no numbers etc. If anything of this bike sounds remotely familiar to you, please post and I will reply.

I have gone thru many bikes since 81, I would sure like to find this one although I know the chances are none to slim.

thanks

I'd start with trying to contact who ever purchased the land/home after your folks left.
If you could get a hold of them, you could get a lead on where it went after that.

My folks think it was given to a coworker or friend of a coworker etc, but can not remember who. It wasnt left on the property itself.

like I said needle in haystack.

Did you have a title for it? Who did you insure it through? You really need to find the VIN for it. That would help a lot. Armed with that info you could do a title search for it and see where it wound up.

If you don't have that VIN then I am not sure what you would do. Perhaps you could post something on craigslist in Farmington. Good luck anyway.

It was titled in my fathers name, as I was 13 when I first got it in '74. I remember still riding it until I got rear ended in '79 or so. My father has made a trip to the NM Dmv in hopes they could find the vin# after searching the license plate number but they wont release any info siteing 2 things: problem locating records-- too old (before the computer age), and privacy.

The only other option I can think of for finding the vin# is searching for a 30 year old accident report with the police or driving records, but then again that was before the computer age.

At this point all I have is a few old pictures.

Hmm,

That may work, police reports are public record I believe. Sometimes they get scanned into the computer system and stored that way. Worth a shot I guess.

Have you thought of buying another and making it look like yours? It will ride and feel the same and the original will just be the one that got away.....................

Besides if you locate the bike someone may not want to part with it and then you are worse off than now. Lot's of things could have happened to it since the late 70's. It may not even exist anymore. I guess it would be fun to find out where it went anyway.

Hope you find it.
