CB72 verification (edit - with link to photos)

Post by amec21 » Sun Dec 31, 2017 5:41 am

Hi all,

i am currently looking at purchasing a neglected CB72 to bring back to life as a historics racer.

The seller sent me some photos and one friend said the engine looked like a 150cc and that i should get him to send me the engine and VIN numbers to confirm it is a CB72 and it is 250cc. in doing so he sent me the following:

CB72 - 1009487
CB72E - 026950

Does this confirm what i am asking?

CB72 denotes 250cc (actually 247)

Your frame number looks like 1964 but the engine number looks rather odd and may be missing the first digit. Can you get a photo of the engine number?

Hi G,

Thanks for the reply.

I will get back in contact with the seller and ask for clarification.

Interesting bike.

There engine (crankcases) are earlier than the frame but the early-style cases with the breather tower at the back are often sought-after fro race bikes because they 'look' more like racers with that style of breather.

If your engine number is correct it would suggest that it could be a 1960 motor - very rare but also unlikely. I would suggest that someone has stamped a replacement case.......

Anyhow - that looks a really nice project.

Interesting to know if it is a 250 or whether it has been overboard.

thanks G,

Are you saying from looking at the photos it is at least the 250cc? Pretty keen to get this lady home.

Definitely a 250. May be larger.

Here are the numbers for CB72/77
