'65 Honda CL72 Tires

Post by 180degree » Mon May 07, 2018 8:56 am

I need to buy a new front/rear tire for a CL72, and I'm looking for something that looks close to original and is functional. The bike isn't a show bike and will be ridden around town on nice days and probably 99% on road. I searched around the site and found some information on CL77/72 tire options but it looked like the info was a few years old. From what I saw it looked like the Dunlop K70 for the front and K81 for the rear were an option some were using. Is this still the best option out there or is there something else you guys are using now?

I would prefer 2x Dunlop K70.
3.50 on the rear and 3.25 for the front. Looks good too.

The K81 is more a sports/race tire.

Thanks for the info, I'm not sure why but I was under the impression that the tread was the same on these tires, it's good to know that they are different and that I'd want to stay with both K70s to match. I think I'm going to order a set of the K70s unless anyone else has another suggestion to consider? I'll need to check to make sure but for some reason I'm thinking the current rear tire on the bike is 4.00, would that size fit and if so would it just be slightly wider?

CL72 tyres

Post by DJM » Tue May 08, 2018 10:09 am

I've been riding my restored CL77 for about ten years now. I've used Cheng Shin tyres throughout with absolutely no problems.

On the front I've used a 3.00-19 C113 (49N) but I believe this tyre has just been continued. If you can find one I'm sure you'll be very happy with it in both appearance and performance.

Cheng Shin tyres are sometimes marketed as Mittas tyres or more recently CTS but regardless of what it's sold as they all seem to say Cheng Shin on the sidewall.

They sound Chinese but are actually made in Taiwan. very good tyres and much better than the Avons and Dunlops we rode on back in the 1960s

I use another Cheng Shin on the rear, 3.50" X 19" 57N which looks a lot like the Dunlop K70 and I think these are widely available. Both work very well on my CL77 although I must stress that I don't go 'off road' with it.

Thanks for the input guys. I just wanted to follow up and say that I ended up purchasing the Dunlop K70s for the front and rear of the bike. The front is mounted and looks really nice and just waiting on a new tube to mount the rear one.
