The slightly raised end is placed over the edge of the sprocket.
Only fits one way. ..................lm

So what does it DO??
Starter Clutch Guide Location?
OK, so just to be clear: it goes into the hole on the top-left, right? Again, a pic of it in place would be nice. What are the others for? Case bolts?
Could NOT having it in place cause the chain to snap? Just asking... SprocketStopper Holes by Dr. Frankenstein1, on Flickr Of the three empty bolt holes below the starter motor cable clamp, the one on the upper left receives the bolt for the starter sprocket stopper. The hole to the right of that is for one of the right side cover bolts. The one below it is for one of the three stator bolts. Keeping the sprockets in line with each other is imperative for chain reliability. Are there any marks on the inboard face of the rotor that could provide a clue?

Thanks Chase, that is exactly the information I was looking for. My confusion was over which of those two top holes was the correct one - I guess I just wasn't seeing the forest for the trees...its very weird - I thought bolting that piece down would effectively prevent the sprocket from turning, but No...
