Steering Handle lockSteering Handle lockBought a 65 dream the steering handle lock tumbler had a broken off key in it. Did Honda use a different key than the ignition key for the lock ? and how do you get the lock tumbler out of the frame ? thanks Blee
Re: Steering Handle lockYou may have a problem, It's quite easy to remove the lock barrel if you have a WORKING key you just need to take of the chrome cover and then the lock should withdraw, if you lock is in the open position it might come out anyway if you tap the locking plunger carefully from the plunger end.
You need somehow to remove the broken part of the key and then order a new one from the number engraved on the end of the barrel. Re: Steering Handle lockthanks for your response, but the tumbler does not come out !!! and I did get the broken off key out but the ignition key does not turn the lock.??? is there a different key ?
Re: Steering Handle lockWhen the bikes were new they came with matching locks, one key fitted both.
Replacement parts were also sold as matched pairs so that even if you only needed the steering lock you had to but a new ignition switch and four or five new keys as well, these kits were expensive. If your ignition key won't fit the lock you need to buy a new key, there should be a small number engraved on the lock and visible once you take of the chrome over, you should be able to find a new key based on that number, some E-Bay sellers have them. Also there are specialist locksmiths who understand the code and can cut a key from that information. Once you get a key that fits the lock you will then be able to remove the cylinder from the frame but probably won't need or want to. Good luck Re: Steering Handle lockBig thanks for your knowledge, I bought the bike last spring it had no keys. I found a guy on ebay that made keys. gave him the key code T1645. He sent the key and it worked fine for the ignition. This spring I got time to get the bike running, and detailing it. It's a original survivor bike with 1,460 miles on it. I notice the handle bar lock was messed up. It turned out that some body drove a screw in the tumbler. Took a while but I got it out. I tried the new Ignition key but it did not turn the tumbler. May has mess the tumbler getting the screw out? the lock has a stamped number on it NA842 not sure what it means. I guess I thought it would be cool to have it work.
Re: Steering Handle lockGo back to the same guy and ask him to make you another key quoting the NA842 number, check closely because I would have expected four digits not three but I may be wrong.
Sadly you'll need to buy a key before you can find out if the lock works or not.
