Plug caps

Post by casamere » Mon Aug 16, 2021 11:31 am

Should I be using non resistor plug caps on my CA77 for a better spark.

I would say yes simply because there is nothing on the bike that will be affected by radio interference. As well, the ignition systems on these machines are a bit weak and the resistor will lower the spark voltage a bit. Be sure that the plug wires are in fact, wires. I've found that the resistive glass fibre and carbon leads that are commonly used in cars are a maintenance headache. Because they are resistive, they will also lower spark voltage.

I found this article a while ago and think it worth a read.

I recently upgraded to an electronic ignition system with new coils and caps, new rectifier and of course the new electronic ignition. Vastly improved the performance. Starts right up and runs very smooth.

There are several electronic ignition kits out there. I used the one from Charlies Place which I am very happy with. Throughout my install I had a few questions and to my great surprise Charlie responded to my emails within minutes to provide some assistance.

When the original coil and points on my CA77 start to fail I will have no hesitation in installing an electronic kit. It may not be original but it will give better performance and peace of mind....and no more points.

Getting back to the thread, these more advanced ignition systems should support resistor plugs and wires. Does the manufacturer say anything about this?
