handlebar grips

Post by ed1965dream » Thu Dec 01, 2011 8:42 pm

My 65 Dream has a twist throttle(not sure if all years do), and I purchased a pair of handlebar grips but the right side doesn't want to go over the twist throttle. Here is what I purchased.

What do I need to look for in grips to fit this twist throttle? Thanks

what year is your dream? I have an early model 1963 and I have the twist throttle. I bought a different throttle assembly thinking I would change it over due to mine being extremely worn. However, when I went to swap them out, I found that the later throttles were different and needed a different slot cut into the handlebars. Since I had just had the original bars rechromed, I didn't want to cut into them. I went back to the earlier throttle housing and found that my grips didn't fit either. I ended up going with these:

Although the first pair I ordered were for a CA95 and were too short. Measure your distances before placing your order to make sure you get the correct ones. IF you notice, the throttle side has a larger opening to fit your throttle housing.

I bought the same ones for my '63 305 Dream. The throttle side was still difficult to get over the bars. I used a hair dryer to heat up the grip and also used some soap. Still took some effort but they do work. I went with the white ones on my red dream. Steve

KellieLynn, My bike is a '65. I've painted it white the same as yours.

Steve, I tried using wd40 to slip the grips on, but they were still tight. I'll try your method of heat and soapy water and see if I can get them on.

While my bike will be mostly stock, I am making a couple concessions. One is the handlebars which I purchased a set of flatter superbike bars. I cut new slots in them for the twist throttle.

Thanks all

Thats right! I forget sometimes, you know the whole age thing is creepin in lol. I didn't realize you had different bars. Heat and soap can work wonders! Good luck!

Aerosol hairspray is another trick you can try.

Those are both the same according to the picture and not the right part number. They may well fit the left side of all those bikes listed, but not the throttle tube on your '65 Dream. You need Honda part number 53165-271-000 or a reasonable knock-off. I think its 1-1/8" dia and with a little grip cement, will slide over the throttle tube without much effort. I would give Ohio Cycle or Western Hills a try.
