CR/CYB confused, amused and generally bemused

Post by Hotshoe » Wed Dec 15, 2010 8:13 pm

I have a question for the Forum brain trust;
In the context of CB72/77 bikes, do the designations "CR" and "CYB" refer to specific bikes and specific parts or are they pretty much interchangable?
I thought the "CR" designation referred to the SOHC engine race kitted bikes and the parts that made up the kit and that the "CYB" designation referred to the DOHC racers and the parts for those bikes.
After a conversation last night I realized I'm not sure, can anyone give me the word?
Thanks, CW

I dont remember what the letters stood for but the system pretty much went like this up until the early '70's:

RC- factory/works race bikes-RC115-RC181
CR-customer/production race bikes-CR72,77,93,110
CYB-parts kits/kitted bikes-CB72/77/350

The RC came back as a designation for 4 stroke RC211/212V MotoGP bikes after 2002,CR became the designation for production/open market 2stroke dirt bikes in the '70's through 90's and RC was a designation for factory/works dirt bikes through the '90s IIRC.

Let's not forget the RC30, with all hand laid glass body work. A homologation bike built in the late 80s, and sold in limited numbers to the public.
