The value of a good painter

Personally I pretty much suck at it. I can't take credit for this work . But thankfully my brother saved me on this one.If I were to paint it half would be orange peel and the other would have a sag in it the size of the Grand Canyon. To all you painters out there. Cheers!!

Can't quite tell from the photo, but did he paint all the way to the edge of the filler neck?

Yup. We back taped it from the inside and painted where the gasket seals and just inside the neck. From what I've read here, there can be troubles of paint peeling in this area. At least I think that's where your going w/ this eh Vince? I thought it might be better than leaving a tape line out side the tank, but I may be wrong. I quess time will tell. Is there other methods anyones had luck with? I cleaned the crap out of this area, and the tank was empty and dry for at least 6 months prior to painting.

Yes, that's where I was going with that, as I just went through that very thing. I just had my tank repainted, and my paint was bubbling a bit around the filler neck. My painter painted to the outside edge of the filler neck, unlike the last time. I raised this specific issue with him, and I deferred to his best judgment. So I guess we'll see if time will tell which is the preferable method (check back with me later this year!). The rubber gasket is new (relatively) on the gas cap, so that wasn't the problem.

as long as he used some good paint and clear coat you should be all right. Some paints hold up to gas others not so good.

Well it appears that the paint has peeled completely inside the neck from where the gasket seals inside the tank neck . The paint is only a week dry and I only had a gallon or so in it, w/ no ride time. Darnit!!!! As this paint was the latest and greatest PPG automotive paint. I can only assume this is an issue w/ the sealer and or primer that is reacting w/ the fuel and not the paint itself.We all know the exterior surface of the paint/ clearcoat is resistant. I'm thinking that longer cure time alone would not have changed the outcome.
