Front Brake Stay

Post by Hamamatsu Nippon » Tue Jun 17, 2014 10:50 am

I have to restore the finish on my front brake stay for a CA77. The rear of course is alloy and cleans up nicely. I lightly removed a top coating of rust and was expecting to see something silver or maybe a natural finish; nothing but steel. So should this be painted silver? I am restoring it to original, rider status, but I don't want to introduce any different colours.

The original was zinc plated.

Zinc plating, wow that surprises me. This part is now the most oxidized piece on my bike.

The rear brake stay is also zinc plated steel, not aluminum. Try a magnet on it....

Hey you're right, the rear sure polished up nicely.

I made up a tool to press out the bushes so that I could send it off for plating.

Looks like a good candidate for diy zinc plating.

Don't think a short bath in vinegar/salts would hurt the bushes, but they could be coated with grease to be sure.
