2 Part Paint?

Post by deafanddiabetic » Fri Apr 17, 2015 12:22 pm

There hasn't been a post in here in months, might as well get it going! :)

I've read through most of these paint threads, people with different methods and styles to painting our bikes.

For the most part, I'm seeing that 2 part enamel paint is the way to go (mostly according to Ed, who I respect his judgement highly).

What exactly is 2 part paint? Does that mean primer+paint? If I go to Autozone (or wherever), what am I asking for in the paint department?

I have an HVLP gun that I've painted bicycles with, more or less I want a resistant white paint that I can clean off without it scratching away under some Simple Green like my Rustoleum Rattle can job did.

Two part paint is similar to epoxy resin, in that it doesent dry until mixed with a catalyst or activator. It is typically quite a bit glossier and tougher than air-dried paint. Acrylic enamel with a catalyst(hardener) added is a pretty good second choice, slightly cheaper than two-part paint. Both of them emit some pretty nasty fumes, you need a first class respirator to protect your health.
