The mucky old engine was already black from new, & it was all there, none coming off anywhere, but really shabby.
So after it was completely washed, cleaned & de-greased, a light 'dusting' coat was applied, allowed to dry, then done again several times until well covered, then a final heavy, wet coat was sprayed on.
The product was MIPA, which I believe is German, I have used this on several engines & all have stood up well so far, no cracking, peeling or flaking, I've even power-jet washed with no problems.
The real secret I believe is total cleanliness, dryness & grease-free.

Ha Ha,
I wondered when that old chestnut would arise!!
Many years ago when I used to paint cars, we had a huge spray-booth (could get trucks in it ) which had air-filter wall-panels with waterfall walls behind that, wonderful, but those days are long-gone, nowadays, my DIY environment is in the back garden on a pile of pallets!!
Obviously I have to choose the spray-days carefully, not so much the primer/filler & guide-coat days, & I use a rubber face-mask respirator with the big round filters on the left & right front.
There's probably more 'muck' inside me than outside, as I'm an 'old-school' guy, 70 next year & from the no health & safety era, we used to boil carbon tetrachloride in open tanks to de-grease parts , saw & mould asbestos on high-pressure steam pipes, scoop mercury out of glass rectifiers etc. etc.

And I'm still here, cough, cough!!

Thanks. I too, have an Al Fresco, paint booth. Just curious on the precautions. Yep - been exposed to all sorts of nasty stuff over the years but do have a little more self-preservation instinct these days. :-)

Thanks for the replies guys, learning a lot!

So more importantly (haha), what about engine breathability? If I were to paint the heads with primer/paint/clear do you think I would have any performance issues with the engine pores being potentially clogged up with paint?

A couple of things, 1, I don't think I'd attempt to paint 'clear' over the paint, any paint for that matter, I'm pretty sure any clear coating WILL be affected by heat, it will probably blister.

Also, I don't know what you mean by 'breathing' & 'pores', the only breathing I'm aware of is via the carbs, & as for pores, I don't think I'd want them in any engine of mine!!

POR 15's "Glisten" clear stands up to heat and chemicals quite well. Never had any problems with it. It's also great for any polished alum. parts. I think you are talking about engine cooling and that should not be an issue.
