Re-zink = tender

Post by chrisnoel » Mon Nov 26, 2012 9:28 pm

Have not yet had good luck with re-zinking hardware. The stuff comes back very tender and I have had to use paper towel bits to keep the wrench from leaving bare spots.

When it came to restoring my CB77 hardware I just de-rusted it all myself in vinegar and painted it all with silver exhaust paint. looks just like zink and actually stands up better to wrenches.

Any one ever try the cadnium plate that is supposed to look like bright zink but actually be durable?

I have all of my hardware done in clear cadnium. It looks a bit different than zinc, but it is durable. I also have a home zinc plating setup, and have no problems with zinc being "tender".

Both of those materials is 'softer' than the parent steel but both provide galvanic protection so that even if they are scratched they will protect the underlying material from corrosion. Paint, however tough, will not provide galvanic protection.

Honda used that process for a reason. If they could have got long-lasting protection on spokes etc with paint, they would have done so.....
