Rick's Motorsports Aftermarket Stator - 2 Wires

Post by Spargett » Tue Jun 15, 2010 5:05 pm

I purchased the aftermarket stator from Rick's Motorsport Electrics (link) to match my modern rectifier already installed.

The instructions state:
(Single Phase, Full Wave Stator and Rectifier/Regulator)
Electrically connect new rectifier/regulator as follows
(2) Yellow or black stator wires to yellow rectifier/regulator wires (no order).

No mention of the pink wire leading up to the headlight switch. Any ideas? Sounds like that pink wire dumps the extra voltage when the lights are on right?

I would assume that's correct. I didn't realize that the system was incapable of charging with the lights on until about 15 minutes ago! ...that would explain why my battery runs out of charge after using the electric starter and only running it with the HL.

I can't give you a 100% answer, I'd call "Rick" back. That system looks pretty awesome, let me know how it works once installed!

Hi Scott,

I think they cannot give the output power because the rotor isn't included.
The rotor, in combination with the stator provides the total output power.

The rotor itself should be in a healthy state, otherwise this stator won't give much more power then the standard combination.

Keep us informed about the way it behaves,

Thanks Jensen. I was more of less curious as what to do with the missing pink wire that usually leads to the headlight switch. I'll try to get someone knowledgeable on the phone over at Ricks today.

I was thinking I might be able to get a quick answer from someone who is knowledgeable in these bike's specifically. Quite the collective wisdom on here.

Scott,

I think the rectifier/regulator in the kit makes the pink wire non-functional and unnecessary. The kit produces full power all the time, and the regulator should sink the excess power (headlight off) to ground.

Honda's method of regulation took the opposite route--the generator produces 66% power with the headlight off, but when the headlight is turned on, the other 33% of generator capacity is switched into the charging circuit through the pink wire.

There should be no problem leaving the pink wire as it is because it doesn't connect to the new stator. Tape it up and forget about it.

Does this address your concerns?

Wilf

Perfect Wilf, thank you. I was guessing something along those lines, but nothing was stated anywhere and I've learned the danger of assumption ; )

I'll let everyone know how it goes and throw some photos up.
