Main circuit breaker

Post by ggray » Wed May 20, 2020 10:24 am

I'm wanting to install a main circuit breaker in my harness between battery and ignition switch on my '65 CL77. What amperage would be my best choice? 15A, 20A, 30A????

Thanks,

Gary

The fuse is rated at 15 A so that's the value I would use.

Just wondered why you would want to do that, fuses and circuit breakers perform much the same function except of course a fuse is a sacrificial device, IE when it blows you need a new one!

Circuit breakers are usually fitted when close setting protection is required, in the case of your CL77 the fuse rating of 15 amp will cope easily with all the electrical load your (standard I assume) electrics can place on it and will only blow in the event of a short circuit somewhere. Circuit breaker will do the same, no more, no less. Of the two I'd say the fuse is more reliable long term, especially when subjected to the vibration and shock loadings found on a motorcycle.

Incidentally, neither a fuse or circuit breaker will protect the charging system, alternator, rectifier etc.

Just curious?

If you want to add some protection, might consider adding a fuse between the rectifier and the + battery terminal.

If the rectifier goes south, there is a direct path to ground from the + battery terminal...….not good!
