Hi,

The black spark plug cap isn't the one I talked about in a previous post, the grey cap is.
The entire bike seems nice, and very good re storable. Yes, Dave is right about the way he wrote about, I do that myself too.

In February I met Dave in person, a very nice guy by the way.

looking at the side cover screws on the head, tell's me the cover never was taken off.

Btw, I visited your home town in February, I think you recognise the spot in the pictures,

Jensen

Jensey, that's Pebble Beach, the "Lone Cypress"! Beautiful photo. I live on the "other side of the hill", I can't quite rub elbows with the folks in that area. We had nice weather in February and it looks like you got to enjoy some of it.

The gray cap...okay, excellent. It won't be going back on the bike, I'll hang on to it.

My 305 is in pretty decent shape, yes, and thank you. If the log hadn't fallen on it, it would be even better!

You are absolutely correct about the motor not being apart. It never has been. Also, it's all original except for the right side cover, which cracked and broke around the kick start shaft and had to be replaced (ages ago).

I forgot about the electric starter - mainly because I never used it. The starter clutch (or something) broke right after I bought the bike (in 1971), and I never corrected it (no money, college girl, etc). It always, always, always started easily with the kick starter, anyway.

That reminds me of riding her. She always ran well, and was always reliable, although the points were fiddly. I recall a ride I did in the countryside whilst in college with some other motorcyclists (I was always getting invited to "go ride!" because I was "that chick with the Honda"). One of the other riders was on a Triumph 750 (first year for that bike). He took his bike up to over 100MPH on a long straight, and I was right there with him on the 305, along with another fella on a BSA. "That little thing goes pretty fast!" he told me later, Yeup. It does!

I hope I'm not boring you guys with this "photographic essay". I'm trying to take as many "before" and then (hopefully) "after" photos as I can.

I did some more preliminary investigative "digging" on the old girl this afternoon. Here are some of my findings:

The chrome on the gas tank is in very good condition. The tank badges are pretty well shot, though. I used a sheet metal screw (or someone did) to hold this one on. Dumb...

Image

The air filters are in remarkable condition. Not rotted and not ripped. They might be useable.

Image

Here's the valley cover, in dire need of stripping and painting.

Image

The seat is off, and it is DIRTY under there! There's some surface rust on frame members, too.

Image

Image

The rubber thingie on the rectifier looks like it just melted off. On touching the rubber, it's like goo. Nasty!

Image

And finally, here she is among friends....

Hi

Great pictures! I like the self-portrait one with the tank badge. You mentioned your wheel rims in an earlier post. Th original ones are sought-after and carry a DID logo in the centre. Replacements never look quite right so I have mine re-chromed by a great company in Yorkshire, run by ladies.

If you can get yours re-done for a sensible price, I would.

Please keep posting the pictures. It's always helpful and very interesting - especially with untouched, original machines.

Fellas, thank you!

The "self-portrait " was inadvertent, believe me.

As for the "gender" of my 305, well, I've never thought about it. All of my vehicles are female. Other gals I know refer to their bicycles or cars, if they have a fondness for them, in the feminine, too. Now - I certainly wouldn't call my Hawk a "he"! The connotations there are just too severe!!! ;)

I will certainly keep posting pictures! I have a D/SLR, I should get some hi-res shots of her before she gets disassembled.

If it was a 'he' it might explain why you had to 'kick' it to get it going :-)

Take care when you pull it apart as original screws and fixings, when restored, are much nicer than replacements.

I did a couple of posts on dismantling speedos but you should find plenty of info here if you use the search function carefully.
