LM, thank you! My bike is (apparently) a 1965 iteration, so the CL trim piece will work, then. Wonderful!

I've opened the carbs up. As you can see from the photos, they're very clean inside. The floats are fine, needle valves are good, and the O rings seem good. I'll take them apart and give them a cleaning, just the same, but all is good so far with them!

There was a red CB77 gas tank on eBay until a few minutes ago. I bought it. My original tank has a dent in the top which I am not capable of pulling out, and it needs to be pulled out to get the cap to seal. Even if I could, I need to the have the tank (and other parts) painted anyway, so I reasoned a good fuel tank, no matter the color, was a must.

I removed the petcock from the gas tank. Yuck. It is a glopped up, clogged mess! I'm going to let it soak in a can of carburetor cleaner for a day or so and then rebuild it. The copper tube has deteriorated, so that will have to be replaced along with all of the rubber parts.

It seems time has taken it's worst toll on the most of the rubber parts on the old girl. The wire harness sheath, the tubing, various grommets, and the gauge mount - all are pretty well rotted. Does anyone know of a "treatment" that I can put on some of the less deteriorated rubber pieces to revive some of the lost suppleness (I've heard of using glycerine, in fact I read it here...)?

The gauge cluster has now been taken apart. As suggested, I used a heat gun and a flat tip screwdriver to C A R E F U L L Y pry up the lip of the chrome bezel all the way around the case of the instrument. Once that was done, the bezel separated cleanly from the case. The gasket was intact, and the rubber seal for the glass was in fine shape, as well. Looking at the works, both springs were intact, but there is a lot of built up grime and dried lubricant in the works. Also, the faceplate is rather badly dented, but I think I can use a wall paper roller on a flat surface and roll those dents out. I do know about the decals available for the face plate, and that item is an option. I need to decide how the needles come off of the shafts before I go any further. The last thing I want to do is bend one of those, or the shafts! I'm going to check with a glass cutter on replacement glass. Perhaps I can save some money there.

Hi

To get the needles off I use a pair of flat bladed screwdrivers underneath. You need to put some card or other protective material on the face and then just pry up with the two screwdrivers. The needles will then just 'ping' off. They'll probably land in a dark dusty inaccessible corner but you'll find them eventually... :-)

Be careful not to get any lube or dirt in between the two parts of the speedo drive drum. The drive is magnetic and requires a clear air gap between the two parts. Two pieces of softwood and a big vise may sort out the distorted dial.

Looks like you're having fun!

Not sure if I've seen pictures of your tank dent. Sometimes it's possible to insert an old tire inner tube and blow the dent out, carefully. Air is a very dangerous medium so take care not to over pressurize.

Oh, yes, I'm having fun!

I'll use your method to get the needles off. I KNOW they'll go flying and it will be month before I find them again, that's a requirement!

I took the tank to a body shop, and they tried to pressurize it to pop the dent. No luck. They were afraid it would pop a seam or cause the tank to "unfold". So, I bought another one instead. I'll keep the original. perhaps try again to un-dent it or just sell it on eBay as is. Perhaps someone could use it.

Here's the dent. It actually extends across the seam. It's in such a place that the gas cap won't seal.
