Kickstart Sealing Plug 28218-268-000

I haven't got into this part of the motorcycle yet but I know the spline on the kickstart gear is stripped so I won't be kickstarting it anytime soon. This 65 CB77 has electric start that either works or is fixable. My question is can I simply leave the kickstarter off, seal the hole with 28218-268-000, and use the electric starter until I source a usable kick starter gear? I admit I have not done a lot of research into this yet but I thought a quick question will let me know if I'm way off base. Thanks.

The sealing plug 28218-268-000 inserts into the splined bottom of the kick starter arm where it pinch-clamps to the splined kick starter gear. The plug's purpose is to seal out the elements (water, grime) from the splined kick starter joint.

With the kick starter arm removed, the splined shaft of the kick starter gear extends through the side cover and would not normally accept a plug or cover. It can run that way, but the splined shaft of the kick starter gear will be exposed without protection.

Bill, you can either find a plastic cap which is just right for the job, or alternatively, get some large enough ID heat shrink tubbing and apply several successive layers to protect the exposed splines. Capture a rubber washer on the end for a perfect seal. Heat shrink can build up a nice layer and later be removed with a razor slice.
