Muffler Packing

Post by Kigsby » Wed Jan 25, 2012 2:58 pm

The PO put some kind of rubber glue or sealer in between where the muffler attaches to the header exhaust pipe, assume it was leaking and it was a cheap fix. After looking for muffler packing, I found one on Craigs list (dark grey and $72) and another from Classic Honda Restoration (orange and $25). They look so different and there's such a difference in price. I'm not sure which one I'm supposed to use! I have a '62 Dream CA77.

The odds are the orange one.
Look at the front of the muffler where the head pipe installs and ya can tell. .........lm

Tim from Classic Honda just told me that the gray ones are for a CL77 Scrambler and will not fit my bike. I should use the smaller orange ones. I'm glad I checked before I ordered them, but it annoys the heck out of me that sellers write that it fits model XXXX when it doesn't!! I'm confused enough as it is! Now I have to pull off whatever the goop is that's on there holding the header and muffler together. The pipes aren't rusty at all so I'm not sure why he wasn't getting a proper seal. Hopefully he just didn't want to spend the $25 to buy the gasket (I hope!)

I just talked to Tim and we had a good laugh!!!!!!!!!
Tim is incorrect.
They are for a CB72/77 BUT THE EARLY/FIRST ISSUE pipes.
BTW they are black. .....................lm

I have a 62 CA77 bought from the original owner, stored untouched since 1965. everything on that bike looks correct and original. It has the black ones. possible someone swapped them, but I wonder?

The early mufflers have a plain end which fits over the front pipe and use the black 'top hat' seal. Later bikes have a ring welded on the end of the muffler and the red seal fits inside this.

This one has the (remnants of) early type 'top hat' seal.

K; before you buy the black "top hat" from tim, ask him if he's had any feedback on the rubber melting with the heat of the bike running.
