I'd say 1962 is a early issue. ............lm

Here's a close up pic of the muffler attached with some kind of goop. I'm afraid of what's going to happen when I take it all off. How does the muffler attach? It looks like there's a metal ring and I guess the orange gasket would go between the ring and the muffler. Does the metal ring screw on?

the black seal in the pic came out of my 62 dream, no metal rings or flanges. Looks like Kigsby's po plastered over hers with some kind of epoxy or what ever...jk

Your picture shows the later type with the ring on the end. The red sealing ring fits inside this. There is nothing to 'attach' the muffler to the pipe just the rubber ring between them. You are fine to pull off that goop once you have a new seal to put in there. :-)

This is the David Silver page for the early type...

I cannot find the later type but I have bought some in the past.

LM

I have looked again - you are right. The muffler has a plain end and the rubber seal is duct-taped on.

The parts from David Silver would work if needed and are pretty cheap....

The bigger gray one on ebay was $72!! It looks just like the David Silver ones for $6. How can that be!? That's such a huge difference in price. I thought the PO didn't want to shell out 72 bucks for a piece of rubber so he just slapped some epoxy on it. I guess I'll have to take off all the gunk and see what's in there. I just wanted to have the replacement part ready before I took it apart so I could put it right back together again. (I finally got it running so I want to ride!) I'll let you know!
