1972 Honda CT70 K1
1972 Honda CT70 K1Hello everyone. I hope you all had a great summer riding your vintage bikes. We were really busy this summer with work so I didn't get the seat time I would have liked to but as they say "You have to mow hay when the sun shines".
Well I decided to restore another old bike for my collection and thought some of you just might enjoy seeing some of the process. There's a little bit of a story to the bike so here it is. Way back in 1972 I owned a Honda Ct70 Mini Trail. I would ride it all around the trails in Labrador City, Newfoundland, Canada and loved the thing. I used it for years and at that time I considered it my best friend. I was the youngest of seven children and the rest of the kids were grown and moved out on there own when I got the bike. I was twelve years old at the time and a year later my mother passed away and it seemed the only thing I had left was my little CT70. As some of you will know I started restoring a few old bikes as a hobby and stopped doing them about a year ago but I was always on the look out for another Honda CT70 like the one I once had and as luck would have it I found one the same color and year in Quebec, Canada. Below is the start of the restoration. There was some damage to the frame because the steering stop was worn so the first thing I did was repair that along with putting a new exhaust on the little bike. Picture shows me tig welding the bike. I'll post some more pics later if anyone's interested in viewing them. Enjoy, Paul 1964 CT200

That looks like fun! I used to have a ST70 which I bought for £50 from a friend. My kids loved it once I'd tidied it up. I actually used it to ride to work for a year or so, which in a busy English city needs a lot more courage than I could eventually find. They fetch crazy money in UK now. Looking forward to seeing yours fettled to your usual standard. G '60 C77 '60 C72 '62 C72 Dream '63 CL72

Thanks guys for your comments. I can well imagine riding in the UK is a far different experience than what it's like here.
Anyway there was a little damage to the speedometer when I got the bike. It happened during shipping. I took the speedo all apart and machined a part on the lathe basically the same shape as the speedo ring to get the profile back into the stainless ring again and it works out great. I installed a new glass that the local glass shop cut for me and the thing is as good as new. I rolled back the mileage to .5 miles seeing I am doing a total restoration. I also made a frame stand out of some scrap metal to mount the frame on during the prep work and assembly. I made it so that I could just put two long bolts in it and it will be used for the painting process. It should work out better than hanging the parts from my lift and having them move when I use the spray gun. I also did a short video of the tear down. http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=786 ... Looking forward to your completed project. I'm sure it will be" Museum Quality" like the rest of them.....................D
Re: Yup, had one of those too.D you know your CT70's my friend. They were a blast to ride for sure. I don't know about the "Museum Quality" when I'm done but It will be the best "I" can do so that should be good enough for me anyway :) I appreciate your comments and thanks. Well the next photo's will show that the bike has been bead blasted and the frame sand blasted. Epoxy primer has been applied and high build primer on top of that. It was all hand sanded to make sure there were no imperfections before the paint was applied. The body work is done and the paint is applied. I went with a tri-coat DuPont ChromaBase paint with added flake finished off with three coats of clear. In the shade it looks gold and in the sun it's close to a candy yellow. 1964 CT200
