CB160 - Timing Question

Well I'm possibly more confused than I was before I asked the question! Kidding, I *think* I have a sense of how I should be checking the timing. But I sure would like to hear a nice loud backfire out of a muffler to confirm I'm at least on the right track.

Don't quote me on the backwards running thing. I'm still looking for confirmation and was hoping emo could help verify it - or not.

The 160 and 175 engines have 360 cranks and one set of points so if ya time the left side to "F" ya should get a bang. If ya turn the drank left ya will open the points on the front of the cam lobe where if ya turn the crank right ya will be on the back side which won't be correct. Ya can't assume the 250/305 trans are at all like the ones in the 160/175 because of the side of the engine the final drive sprocket is on. Totally different clusters in there. .........lm

Here's how to know for sure (and prove whether I'm way off in left field). Kick the motor over with the kick start and observe which direction the stator turns. Then rotate the stator in that direction to set the static timing.

Let me know what you get. My curiosity is killing me!

It turns counter-clockwise. Also indicated by arrow on timing rotor... :) Indeed I had been setting the points 90 degrees off, but still no pop. A related question: do the plugs fire simultaneously? I don't know the history of this bike so it's impossible to rely on what I was given. It has a single coil, with upper and lower plug wires. Both wires are getting a strong spark, and the plugs are also new NGKs.

Both plugs do fire together.
It's the valve timing which causes only one cylinder at a time to fire. ...............lm

That's what I thought. So switching the wires around is a waste of time :)

Is there any way to check valve timing without dropping the engine?
