Honda CB160 clutch gear lightening

Hey everyone -

A gentleman who races CB160s mentioned that one modification that can 'easily" be performed is to remove one of the large staggered gears from the rear of the clutch basket. Disassembly of the oil pump/clutch basket necessitates slipping off the first corresponding small staggered gear from the crank shaft, which I did.
My questions are these:
1)Does that first small gear remain removed if I am going to perform the further removal of one of the larger gears from the basket?
2)If the answer is "yes", should I assume that the inner large gear (one closest to the clutch basket)is then the one to be removed from the basket?

If that is true, then
3)Does the inner large gear that is removed need to be replaced with a "spacer" in order that the remaining outer large gear can stay in mesh with the remaining smaller gear on the crank shaft?
If the answer is "yes', then
4)is re-riveting recommended or can screws be used to reassemble the remaining large gear and spacer?

The first question is why you want to do this? The two gears are spring loaded to reduce backlash and consequent noise. Removing one of them will increses noise.

To answer my own question - I assume your friend is aiming to lighten the transmission and reduce intertia.

What are you going to use the bike for?

1) probably but you will need to reain alignment fro the remaining gear
2) One of them is thinner, I believe. Keep the thicker one as you want to be able to reliably transmit power.
3) yes
4) You can use screws but you will have to tap the holes in the clutch basket, use high tensile screws and make sure they clear everything when you have finished..

Thanks G-man. I should have mentioned that this would be to build up a racing motor. I am just considering "simple" alterations that may improve things a bit without spending big bucks on more sophisticated go-fast modifications.

To be clear, which gears are spring loaded? The small ones on the crank or the ones on the clutch basket?

BTW, I do plan on asking this guy the same questions - I just thought it would be good to hear other opinions. Thanks again for your input!

I may be wrong but I would think the clutch gear might be spring loaded.

What's the maximum capacity you can go to? A bigger bore amd pistons (from a 175) would provide a bit more "go".

Going on a diet for a couple of weeks would probably have more beneficial effect than throwing away bits of primary drive, in my opinion.... :-) Less fun but more effect........

Here's a nice (winning) one I saw at a recent AHMRA race in New Jersey. This is a 175, I think.

G-man: I was at that race ( about three weeks ago as I recall). Thanks for the input. Believe me - losing about 10-15 pounds is definitely one of the modifications that I am considering!

Yes - that was the one. I drove all the way down from Rochester NY to get there and then drove back to White Plains, NY afterwards.

That bike went really well.
