engine build - slowly but surely

Post by Dick Eastman » Mon Oct 24, 2016 7:00 pm

The head ready to install; starter rebuilt, transmission set up, with new offset cotters, new bushings throughout, end play set up. Made a new sprocket retainer [NOS retainers have too much play in the c'shaft ring groove], ring groove measures .098"wide, nos retainer about .092". so I made one .0975". Also cut off kick start shaft, and made a torque arm to make sure it does not move. Also installed a number of 6 and 8mm heli-coils in cases and head. Been using S/S socket cap screws/washers where I can. Made a new cam chain tensioner shaft, as well.

Electronic ignition?

Post by DJM » Fri Oct 28, 2016 12:32 pm

Dick,

Great set of pictures. It looks as if you have some sort of crank mounted ignition system (which?) and a new alternator cover. Do you have a new cover because the ignition system won't fit inside the standard cover or just because you like the look of the finned cover.

Pictures please of the fitted unit plus more details, especially a report of how it compares with the standard points / contact breaker set up when you get the out on the road (street)

I fancy a more modern system myself but to be fair the standard system isn't causing me a problem, plus with me riding both a CB and a CL regularly I would want to convert BOTH bikes at double the cost. This is hard to justify without very definite benefits.

Very nice work, Dick.

I see you have the late style clutch with the extra oil hole, too.

Is that with your rebuilt crank and re-profiled cylinder head?
