Starter chain - how many links?

Post by GregMcN » Sun Oct 29, 2017 10:22 am

Bought a replacement starter chain from David Silva but would not fit. The one fitted was 60 links and the replacement only 58. Just wanted to check that 60 links was standard.

Thanks Greg

Hello Greg, 58 links is correct for the stock starter chain (DK219, 58). The starter sprocket has 13 teeth, while the crank sprocket has 36. Regards, Chase

Thanks CK

Will check sprockets tonight. As 58 link chain does not seem to fit I can only assume sprocket is wrong but will see.

It's usually easiest to install the chain onto the sprockets, and then slide both sprockets onto the crank and starter at the same time. If the crank sprocket rotor/stator are all in place, remove the sprocket from the starter. Then put the starter sprocket in the chain, and slide the starter in from the left (up against the front of the engine), while engaging the sprocket onto the starter splines. Regards, Chase

Thanks Chase, I checked and sprockets have the right number of teeth and essentially I had used your technique to try and fit but maybe the extra links in the fitted chain put me off so will try again tonight to check I am not being stupid.... it has happened before!
