Under Crankcase

Post by deuce_7 » Thu Jun 28, 2018 10:08 am

1967 CL77
Engine no. CL77E1054xxx

This is first issue I've posted since introducing myself a couple of months ago. Thinking about undertaking a top end job soon, since the engine is smoking more and I'd like to fix that problem. (Original bore and pistons, head has never been off). The engine still runs well, it's just smoky at times.

While the engine is out, I'd like to replace the under crankcase casting; it was damaged years ago (decades ago, actually) from a broken drive chain ripping out big pieces on the bottom in the area below the drive sprocket.

Questions: Are these 305cc under crankcases generally interchangeable? Anything specific to look for when sourcing the part? Is it a basic "parts swap" or more involved?

Crankcase swap

I'm 99% sure that all C/CA/CB/CL 72 and 77 LOWER crankcases are interchangeable except for a few very early C/CA engines which had a smaller drive side main bearing.

If it looks like it will fit then it will.

Make sure you get one with the primary tensioner mounts. Post 1962, I think.

D; I have swapped case halves a few times. It works just fine. as has been mentioned, if it looks the same , it is the same and will work. there are some oil passage differences to look for. also I have seen some cases with galling on the main bearing bores, these are not good candidates.
I have a pile of cases that can be had for the cost of shipping, or come by and get them in Bellingham Wa.
Good luck
Randy
