Should I replace my air filters?

Post by Spargett » Tue Oct 07, 2008 8:01 pm

I have a 62' CB77 I just picked up. I noticed that the left air filter has a pretty nice tear in the rear left side about 1". The other one is just starting to look a little old. Both are clearly replacements, but I'm not sure exactly how old they are.

How important is it to replace is there is a tear/getting old? Just curios to tap the wealth of experience here and see what you think since replacements aren't exact cheap.

Thanks!

Can you explain just a tad what the most detrimental aspect is of worn air filters? Sorry if that's an obvious question beyond filtering the air, but I'd love to hear it from the experienced horse's mouth.

Dirty air can/will cause wear on the carb slides and intake valves. ..................lm

Filtering air is very important and that is its function. Engines take a large volume of air in the combustion chambers when they run. Unfiltered air will rapidly wear your cylinders, pistons, and rings. All these parts are internal engine parts and will be expensive and complex to fix. Filtering your air is critical for engine longevity. You said your filter has rips in it that is more than a worn air filter it is a useless filter.
