Is this rust in my tank?

Post by Spargett » Wed Dec 10, 2008 12:24 am

I had a hard time trying to get the bike to start today. It was acting as if there was no gas (which there was plenty in the tank - a little old though). I could see gas in the fuel filters as well. So I popped off the carb's float bowls and saw some dark brown spotty residue at the bottom. It was slimy to the touch. It looked like what I imagine rust to be.

So I drained the fuel from the gas tank and took a closer look inside. Does this look like rust to you? I'm not sure if I need to treat the tank with with a solvent/sealant. What do you think?

Hi Spargett,

Gosh, run some fuel filters before you do anything else! Then there's ml's points timing ritual!

Cheers— Mar'

I hear you. I took the bike apart to clean the fuel system anyway. I was just seeing if anyone could verify that it is indeed rust through visual confirmation. I took this opportunity to drain old fuel and oil anyway.

What do you mean by exactly do you mean by "run some fuel filters"? That can be interpreted rather vaguely.

Fuel filters filter the fuel before it reaches the carburators to keep them clean.

Cut your two fuel hoses that connect to each carburator in convenient locations and put (2) in-line fuel filters—one for each carburator—where you cut each fuel hose.

Clean out your petcock's bowl and strainer screen too.
