Working on my first cl72 (cl77 top end). I noticed that points cam had several degrees of free play before the advance springs started to tension.
I inspected the advance unit and noticed that spring hooks were loose on mounting pegs, but the coils were not stretched.
The springs looked ok, so I am wondering if the initial freeplay due to spring slop in the advance unit springs is normal ?

Re: advance unit springs
There should be no free play.
Tension should be at the time ya move the points cam.
I've found CB/CL72/77 cam sprockets which had DREAM springs installed ????????????? and the pistons showed heavy soft soot/carbon. .....................lm

Actually ya can bend some of the slack from each spring.
I've used long nose pliers with good grip to bend them on the sprocket.
Ya can tell as each has the correct length as ya bend them one at a time. ..................lm

Any tips on where I can source the springs? I have not had any luck finding an online vendor that has springs.
Also is it possible there is wear in the advance unit itself, since the springs appear ok ?
I noticed you can still get the entire advance unit assembly from Honda.

I purchased a pair of these:

Haven't installed them yet - I am going to try and do it in place from the top, without removing the whole assembly.
