| I've been pouring over this site since I bought my dream last week. So much info, impressive enough, but more so for such an old bike. Anyway, Is anyone else struck by the number of unresolved posts? Meaning, a question is asked, an answer or suggestion is give and there's no reply saying it worked, didn't, or other. Know what I mean? No big deal, It just seems odd in comparison with other motorcycle sites I frequent. |

Yes, I agree! I dispense a lot of info, and rarely is the actual solution posted. Listening everyone?

| I really didn't want to be too critical, being new and all, but that's kinda what I was getting at. I think it would be helpful ( not to mention polite) to follow up advice with how it worked out, or didn't. It's almost comical how many post die after advice/suggestions are givin! |

I agree with you both. Wish more people would post courtesy follow ups once their q-s were answered and problems diagnosed. Kind of surprising, given the tight focus of the website/forum and the active and dedicated community.
I'll consider any good suggestions on how to improve the follow-up situation...

A rating system is one possible solution. Positive, Nuetral, Negative. A predetermined number of negative feedback would result in loss of posting priveledges. Positive ratings could also be used to rank or sorts posts to those most helpful, moving the waste of time ones to the bottom of pile. I'm just brainstorming from another site I frequent on another unrelated topic. I feel the system works well and helps weed out the(free takers) if I may be so blunt. Just thought it might be worth a mention.

I suspect some of these are replied to with PM's. I know I have done this one occasion.

PS. I see the ad for the '66 CB 77, where I posted the link several days ago, is gone from Craigslist. Did someone on this forum buy it ? I certainly hope so. Looked too good to be put into the gentle hands of a couple of 15 year old kids. ( yeah, I know that's where most of us started.) _________________ "a free motorcycle is a bottomless hole intended solely for money" |

I found this the other day on another forum, it's one of those "Read First Before Posting" messages.
http://www.cplusplus.com/forum/beginner/1/
The topic is quite different, but these rules do apply to any message board. It would need to be tweaked for the subject (maybe "don't ask homework questions" won't apply here :).
I don't know if this will solve the problem, it is quite common on all message boards. Many people want a quick answer, don't take the time to read or search, and sometimes never come back. I don't see much of that here. This forum is quite unique, and if you have a 305, it's the place to be!

Here is a suggested sticky post that may apply:
------------------------------------
Please, read before posting:
How To Ask Questions
The kind of answers you get to your questions depends as much on the way you ask the questions. Readers actually like answering questions. If we didn't, we wouldn't be here.
Take time to read posts in each area and explore the web site. You will find a wealth of information here, and you may better understand the personalities of the people who frequent the message board.
Before You Ask
- Try to find an answer by reading the FAQs.
- Try to find an answer by searching the forum.
- Prepare your question. Think it through. Hasty-sounding questions get hasty answers or none at all.
- Include a picture if it applies.
- Update your profile and include your location. It helps others to know how to respond if we know your State, Provence, etc. or Country.
Frequent readers get tired of answering the same questions. If you make a good attempt at searching for your answer, you may find it. If you don't find it, you know you have a good question that is likely to get a reply.
When You Ask
- Choose the best forum for your question.
- Use meaningful, specific subject headers. The subject header is your golden opportunity to attract qualified experts' attention. Don't waste it on headers like 'Please help me', or 'How do I...'. Make your subject line reflect your question well enough that the next guy searching the forum with a question similar to yours will be able to find it.
- Write your question clearly using proper sentences and punctuation. Spend the extra effort to polish your language. It doesn't have to be stiff or formal.
- Don't TYPE IN ALL CAPS; this is read as shouting and considered rude.
- Be precise and informative about your problem
•Describe the symptoms of your problem carefully and clearly.
•Describe the research you did to try and solve the problem before you asked the question.
•Describe the diagnostic steps you took to try and pin down the problem yourself before you asked the question.
- Attach a photo of the problem area if applicable.
Follow up
Send a note after the problem has been solved to all who helped you. Let them know how it came out and thank them again for their help. This sort of follow up helps everybody who assisted feel a satisfying sense of closure about the problem.
If you solved the problem using Private Messages (PMs) or phone calls, please post a short follow up on how you solved the problems so others with the same problem may benefit. |
