coil conversion?

i have a 64 305 dream wondering if their is a modern type coil i can buy and modern plug wires? my plug wires are shot! and the coil is heavily coroded.

Almost any coil will work - try a coil from almost any 4 cylinder bike - most have a coil with dual spark plug leads. I use an early Honda 500-750 coil. When I bought my Dream it had an automotive coil with the spark plug leads spliced together - it ran.

I just went through the same problem with trying to replace the original coil on my 66 ca77. I bought one from ebay that was for a CB550- 750 honda. It was new and it works great. You can use the original coil mount bracket from the original. Just drill out the two rivets that hold the coil to the bracket. Bolt the new coil to the bracket with 1/4"-20 bolts and nuts.Now my bike is a true 1 kick start bike. The coil I used is black and has two screw on caps for the plug wires.

Coil replacement: One of the many manuals on motorcycles that I still have offers the
solution by going to K-mart and getting any 12 volt automotive coil. The author said you could purchase a decent coil for around $10 bucks , which kind of dates that manual.
Any 12volt coil will work, the problem then becomes the size and how much modification
you want to do, a regular hose clamp in a appropitate size will work just make sure the outer
shell of the coil is well grounded. Another idea is your local auto performance shop, which
definitely be a great source for various sized coils, even chrome coils mounted on the front downtube will work it just depends on how much wet weather you ride in.

Don't forget to silicone spray the coil tops and the spark plugs wires , several coats and give
ample time to dry, it will help with wet weather.

I noticed when reading the electronic coil replacement info that it stated the old point systems
were hard to get exact.

Solution: gap the right cylinder points exactly to .014 "
use .013 to slip and .015 to no go
use timing light set to read the right cylinder firing
rotate entire point assembly plate to get the right side firing at the appropriate
timing mark Make sure idle speed is set , adjust idle speed if necessary as it
"may" change as the right cylinder fires when it supposed to. Lock point assembly
at that position.

Adjust left cylinder firing by adjusting left point gap.

Question: points can be properly set with a dwell meter also.
If you ever adusted a GM car dwell you know what I'm Talking about.

The Question is "What is the correct DWELL ANGLE FOR 305 Hondas ????
I've forgotten since the last time I did it was around 1979 the last time I did it!
