A quick update...

Post by smccrory » Mon Oct 20, 2014 10:09 pm

I don't have more videos at the moment but I've made more progress with my '66. I replaced the steering bearings, checked fork seals and refilled 'em with fork oil. It wasn't the easiest of jobs but I got it done with help stabilizing the bike on my cheapo HF lift. Anyway, she rides SO much better now and the engine is performing great. Gets up to 60-70 mph pretty quickly, and makes me appreciate my other bikes' wind protection all the more. :1drink Since I'm not going all-original, I bought a couple bar-end mirrors that function a lot better than the stock ones, and give the bike a more aggressive profile. The new tires are working great and look pretty good too.

I still have some mechanical "squawks" to work through - the biggest of which is a failure to shift up through 2nd gear once in a while. I'm starting to figure out how to coax it through but I know that someday I'll want to pull the engine and address what are probably worn shift arms.

The cool thing is that I managed to get the bike operational before the winter when I can be a but more fussy about its cosmetics, like painting the tank, replacing the mufflers, etc. Good stuff!

Great progress in such a short time. When you look into the tranny you might want to look into getting some offset cotters. These bikes have a tendency towards poor gear alignment and the cotters shift the gears over a little on their shafts.

Remember also that you can turn the engine over and split the cases without disturbing the top end.

Hey G-Man, would you also have a recommendation for compatible mufflers? I couldn't find any on David Silver Spares' site, and ones on eBay from Thailand look OK, but their shipping costs are high.

Thanks in advance!
Scott

David Silver Spares have announced that they will be supplying replica CB77 mufflers by Christmas. I saw the prototypes at the Stafford Classic Bike show last week.

350 pounds seems quite reasonable

Wow. Very nice but add headers and shipping, and that's close to $800 USD. Surely justifiable for a show bike, but way too rich for my little runner. ;-)
