It's a '65 305 and I'm wondering how to tell if it takes a 6 or 12 volt battery. There's a 6 volt in there now (im guessing) because it's small and swimming in the battery tray. Under the opposite side cover, the prominent part (yes, I'm dumb and don't know what this part is) that has a black wire attached to one end and a green attached to the other, it has the marking "12 volt" imprinted on it. Would lead me to think the bike takes a 12 volt battery? That being said, the (assuming) 6 volt battery in there now does the job of running the lights and cranking the engine.
Thanks.
A really dumb question - 6 or 12 volt?
All of the Dreams of that type run on 12 volts.

A voltmeter is the best way to check, but you if you can see the cells, a 12 volt will have 6 (2 volts per cell.) The size has nothing to do with the voltage. I don't think they currently make one that fits the tray, although you might find a NOS that will. For this reason many bikes have one's that don't fit, but will do the job.
